Who is the school for?

Shalom School

Crucially, Shalom is a community school and a resource for the whole of Teso by providing:

  • courses, seminars and workshops for adults who have missed out on completing their education
  • in-service training for teachers from other schools
  • quality, affordable medical facilities in the Health Centre open to the local community who have no clinic at present
  • employment for people from the local community
  • a community church at the centre of the school
  • a conservation tourism project
  • development of the nearby trading centre of Kapir
  • improved agricultural methods

When completed, Shalom School will provide full time boarding education for 1680 girls and boys in inspiring, sustainable buildings designed by architect Marion Regitko. The buildings and layout will give a sense of traditional communities with a family atmosphere, helped by having comparatively small classes of only 40 students and small dormitories with only eight children from different classes in each. There will be 100 three-bedroomed family houses for staff.
