EXTRACT FROM THE TESS GOVERNING DOCUMENT
as agreed by the Trustees on 17 June 2009
The Trustees must apply the income of TESS in furthering the following objects ("the objects"):
Object 1. To support impoverished children and young people (below the age of 30) living in or originating from Teso (a region in north east Uganda consisting mainly, but not exclusively, of Iteso and Kumam people) and the communities in which they live in various ways in order to help the beneficiaries grow into mature adults of integrity who can provide for themselves and their families and take positions of responsibility within their communities, so bringing about change for the better and lifting themselves, their families and their communities out of poverty.
This support may include any of the following:-
- Sponsorship and support for education to levels appropriate for each young person;
- Sponsorship and support for short courses for those who have dropped out of primary or secondary education for whatever reason;
- Sponsorship and support for those who have become pregnant below the age of 18;
- Support and training for microfinance initiatives to enable beneficiaries to earn pocket money and start becoming more independent even whilst still in educational institutions or on training courses;
- Support and training for microfinance initiatives in communities where individual beneficiaries live;
- Provision for medical treatment and health facilities for the sponsorship beneficiaries;
- Provision of appropriate emotional, spiritual, academic and careers guidance and support;
- Provision of extra-curricular activities, teaching and resources for beneficiaries;
- Facilitating the setting up of income-generating projects and facilities in Teso, and Uganda generally, for the benefit of the activities and beneficiaries of the Charity in Teso.
Object 2. To support education in Teso
- This support may include any of the following:-
- Providing and/or facilitating in-service training for teachers in Teso, and Uganda generally;
- Providing and/or channelling resources for educational institutions in Teso;
- Improving educational institutions in Teso;
- Supporting the setting up of new educational institutions in Teso primarily (but not exclusively) for the poorest children which will be of the highest standards and so provide an example and training for other educational institutions in Teso, and Uganda generally;
- Advocacy work within Teso, Uganda and internationally on behalf of educational institutions and students in or from Teso, and Uganda generally to facilitate change and improvements;
- Facilitating the registration of TESS as an NGO (non-governmental organisation) in Uganda.
Object 3. To raise awareness
This support may include any of the following:-
- Publicising the needs and problems affecting children, students, educational institutions and communities in Teso, and Uganda generally;
- Enabling and encouraging people to travel to Teso, and Uganda generally, to experience the problems and needs and to assist in the work;
- Mobilising people in any country to work and lobby for the benefit of education, children and young people from Teso, and Uganda generally;
- Carrying out research and/or surveys for the benefit of education, children and young people from Teso, and Uganda generally.
Whilst the raising of awareness and funds may be focused mainly in the UK and Uganda, the links already made in Ireland, Germany, France, Holland and USA through sponsors in those countries may be strengthened and extended into other countries. Groups in other countries involved in the work of TESS may become affiliated to TESS in appropriate ways.
Object 4. To make grants or loans to other charities or institutions or organisations if the projects meet all or some of the objects of this Charity
